The Bear is a novel by Canadian author Marian Engel. It was first published in 1976 by McClelland and Stewart. The book tells the story of Lou, a lonely and repressed librarian who is sent to a remote island to catalogue the estate of an old ornithologist, Colonel Jocelyn Cary. While there, she encounters a bear and begins a sexual relationship with the animal.
The Bear has become famous for its controversial subject matter and has been interpreted in a number of ways, including as a feminist allegory and as a commentary on colonialism. It won the Governor General's Award for fiction in 1976 and has since been translated into several languages.
